Why Should I Feed Fibregest to My Alpaca or Llama?
Soluble fibre in 3mm pellet form is ideal for both young and old alike. The small particle size (like feed that has been chewed for a long time) aids the digestive system of the camelid by providing a high quality, more available, energy source for fermentative foregut bacteria.
Maintaining natural foregut digestion is crucial for the health and vitality of alpacas and llamas. The nature of the feed can have dramatic effects on wellbeing, as all food goes straight into the fermentation vat of the forestomach where factors like motility, gas eructation, regurgitation, remastication and reswallowing are all part of the normal feeding process.
Fibregest is very complementary to this digestive process in terms of the nutritional, physical and supplementary content. The digestibility of the soluble fibre will energize microbial activity, so maintaining a high rate of nutrient release for the benefit of the camelid. The criteria for maintaining functional fermentation:
- A constant pH of between 6 and 7, i.e. slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
- A high fibre and low/non grain diet to sustain populations of cellulolytic bugs.
- A high fibre diet to maintain saliva production, gut motility and gas eructation.
- A high fibre diet to maximise regurgitation, remastication and reswallowing.
Why we Recommend Grass Testing
Our range is designed to meet the nutritional needs of your herd. However, as grass can vary across the country, we recommend that you carry out grass testing to check the specific nutrient and mineral levels in your local area. This helps to highlight any potential deficiencies or toxicities present on your land or in your feeding. For more information about grass testing please get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System
Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.
Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:
- Maintain gut cell integrity.
- Maintain the lining of the gut.
- Support the immune system.
- Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.
Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers
Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.
Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants
Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.
Oat Derived Beta Glucans
Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.
Phospholipids
Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Is Fibregest Suitable for Pregnant Hembras?
Yes, it is commonly used to maintain body conditions which are important when forages are poor or grazing is reduced. However, in the last 3 months of pregnancy we recommend that Hembra & Cria is also fed to support the growing foetus.
Is Fibregest Suitable for Crias?
We would not recommend feeding Fibregest to cria below 6 months of age, as the pellet is 3mm wide, which can cause lodging in the oesophagus. Our other feeds, including Hembra & Cria and Crialibra, are 2mm in width so this is not an issue.
What Sizes is Fibregest Available in?
Fibregest comes in a 20kg bag.
Can I Try a Sample Before I Buy?
Yes of course, if you would like a sample of one of our products please just get in touch.
Where Can I Buy Fibregest?
Depending on your herd size it may be more cost effective to source from one of our retail stockists. Alternatively, you can order from us directly if required. Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. Our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.
What is the Oatinol™ Delivery System?
The Oatinol™ Delivery System is a ground-breaking concept only found in GWF Nutrition products. It means that a higher rate of absorption of important nutrients is maintained by your animal’s digestive tract, allowing them to properly utilise the key ingredients and benefit more fully.
Oatinol™ helps the absorption of actives including glutamine, trace elements, minerals and vitamins whilst extracting more nutrients from the ingested daily forage of the camelid.
My Camelid is Struggling to Hold Weight - What Should I Feed?
If a camelid is struggling to maintain weight this will be due to insufficient calories/MJ’s. If you are feeding Camelibra at the desired level and the camelid has a good supply of hay and no ailments, then it may be prudent to feed more MJ’s through Fibregest or Fibregrass. This would also be the case if grazing or hay stocks are restricted to ensure better utilisation of the feed.
Can You Feed Too Much Fibregest?
Yes. Above 2gm/kg is not sensible due to the added electrolyte element of the product - this can become a problem when fed significantly above the recommended level. There is also a cost element per day which needs to be balanced against what you are trying to achieve.
What is the Energy Level/ME of Fibregest?
10.6 ME (November 2023)
Is Fibregest GM Free?
No, Fibregest contains GM soya hulls. Soya hulls are a great camelid feed and also provide additional pectins for improved digestion. They also offer exceptional buffering properties in the camelid's gut, particularly important if an excess of acid (low pH) or haylage is being fed.
Why Does Fibregest Contain Micronized (Sugar) Beet Pulp When Excess Sugar is Not Good for Camelids?
Sugar beet is the crop that beet pulp is created from. Beet pulp is the fibre left after sugar is extracted in the UK and this largely occurs at British Sugar in East Anglia. Sugar extraction has evolved significantly in the past two decades and residues are minimal. What is left are high quality digestible fibres which are excellent gut conditioners for both ruminants and pseudo ruminants like camelids. This is a great energy source which releases slowly making it a good nutritional fit across the day, like soya hulls. Beet pulp/soya hulls also contains pectin fibres which are excellent for hind gut fermentation and also for strengthening the natural mucus layer that lines the digestive tract. This surface protection helps to prevent antagonists from entering via the gut wall into the blood stream and is very beneficial against the causes of metabolic laminitis.
Micronized sugar beet pulp is made from unmolassed sugar beet pulp which has not had any molasses added. The act of micronizing involves a type of cooking and then flaking. This prevents protein from denaturing and is a good fibre profile for a camelid being equally divided between cellulose, hemicellulose and pectins. This is important because fibre digestion occur right along the gut.
Does Fibregest Contain Wheat?
No absolutely not. It does contain black oats which have less starch than feed oats. Its starch release is also slower across the day as opposed to a feed like wheat or maize, which are much higher in starch and dangerous for a camelid.
A lot of feeds on the market use wheatfeed (middling’s) which is a wheat by-product. The starch element of this can have a delayed breakdown leading to fermentation in the lower gut which can in turn cause intestinal ulcers. Fibregest also contains hempseed, linseed expeller, soya hulls and micronized beet pulp.
Does Fibregest Contain a High Level of Starch?
Fibregest contains low levels of starch and this comes from black oats. Oat starch has a slower release meaning that the energy is released over a longer time period and is safer in a camelid diet. Starch still plays a limited role in energy supply for a camelid although not to the same levels as a ruminant and is necessary for the Oatinol Delivery System and the benefits that brings.
Does Fibregest Contain Amino Acids?
Yes - although all foods contain a certain level of amino acids which together fall under the banner of protein. Amino acids are an important element of a camelid's diet because the body will extract glucose from amino acids via the “gluconeogenesis process”. The camelid body can manufacture some amino acids from its feed supply, but needs others to be specifically added. Certain feed ingredients can contain a high supply of amino acids. Linseed expeller, for instance, has a good supply of lysine. Camelibra adds the additional amino acids required in the diet, and in particular protected methionine.
Can I Feed Fibregest to my Goats?
Goats could certainly eat Fibregest although they should not be fed higher than 1 gram/kg bodyweight of Camelibra. Fibregest should not be fed to sheep, however, because of the copper levels included.
