The transformation is remarkable

November 18, 2015

You may recall that I wrote to you in April this year after my 9 year old Arab gelding had done extremely well in a 50 mile long distance ride at Salisbury on a diet of Equilibra and Energest, carrots and chaff. (The horse had a previous history of looking poor despite being fed large quantities of hard feed and in November 96 had been diagnosed by Mary Bro’ily as having an unbalanced PH level for which she prescribed bicarbonate of soda. Because I had read that poor digestion and the wrong food could cause the PH level to become unbalanced I had eliminated all concentrates from his diet, after which he did the event at Salisbury and I wrote to you.).

During this summer, the horse, Lunar Rain (Looney) has run 725 miles in long distance competitions on this diet. (9x 50 miles, 5 x 40 miles and 3 x 25 miles) He does about 100 miles a week in training. Some 3000 horses are registered with the Endurance Horse Society but he was runner-up in three trophies and third in two others. He was second in the Arab trophy, third in the senior open championship and gained his 1000 mile award.

Had it not been for a ‘technicality’, he would have won three of the aforementioned trophies, as very few points separated the top contenders.

I have never divulged to anyone his somewhat strange diet. We are of course exhorted to feed our ‘performance’ horses performance food, i.e.. 121b a day for this type of work. On the other hand, no one has commented that he looks thin, and indeed he looks better than I have ever seen him. When I consider that it was only two years ago that he was banned from long distance for a whole season because he was so thin, the transformation is remarkable.
