Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:

  • Maintain gut cell integrity.
  • Maintain the lining of the gut.
  • Support the immune system.
  • Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers

Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.

Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants

Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.

Oat Derived Beta Glucans

Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.

Phospholipids

Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What Makes Fibregest Unique?

Like most of our products, Fibregest has been formulated with our our proprietary Oatinol Delivery System™. This allows for a higher bio-availability of important nutrients within the feed.

Oatinol™ allows for the improved absorption of nutrients by blocking pathogens and supporting the immune system, maintaining cell integrity and gut lining and finally aiding the absorption of key ingredients from minerals and vitamins to high value actives. It is a feed for conditioning that works very well with our balancer Equilibra.

Who Should Fibregest be Fed to?

Fibregest is a fibre feed designed to improve body condition scores (BCS) and is fed alongside our balancer Equilibra.

Fibregest also contains an electrolyte element to allow improved absorption particularly before an activity. Its typical usage is over the winter months, where grass is poor and to improve digestion of hay in particular in a winter diet.

It can also be fed at other times of year if grass growth is poor and depending on equine workloads. Fibregest provides pectins and balances phosphorous levels which are often inadequate for a horse's needs in both grass and various forages.

Can Fibregest be Fed With Balancers?

Yes absolutely. It is specifically designed to be fed alongside our own balancer Equilibra and can also be fed alongside our simple vitamin and mineral supplement OneCup.

Can Fibregest be Fed With Any of Your Supplements?

Yes absolutely.

What Sizes is Fibregest Available in?

Fibregest comes in a 20kg bag.

Can I Try a Sample Before I Buy?

Yes of course, if you would like a sample of one of our products please just get in touch.

Where Can I Buy Fibregest?

Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. If your local feed store is not currently stocking Fibregest please let us know and we may be able to help. Alternatively our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.

Can You Feed Too Much Fibregest?

Yes although the feeding regimes mean you would need to be feeding a significant amount for it to be a problem as it is much safer than overfeeding a mineral balancer.

The accumulated starch content is more likely to be the first barrier, although this also depends on your horse's workload. Cost would also be a consideration as you will want to balance the desired body condition score against cost effectiveness. Fibregest is designed to support Equilibra which helps your horse make better use of forages and reduces the need for additional concentrate in the first place.

Is Fibregest GM Free?

No, Fibregest contains GM feeds, specifically soya hulls. As a result of a number of factors. raw material costs have risen sharply and to keep Fibregest competitive we have had to use alternative fibres. Soya hulls are a great equine feed, however, and also provide additional pectins for improved digestion.

Does Fibregest Contain a High Level of Starch?

No, Fibregest contains less than 10% sugar and starch. The starch also comes from black oats, meaning that the energy is released over a longer time period and is safer in an equine diet. Starch still plays a role in the energy supply of an equine's diet (although particular disorders may mean alternatives to starch need to be sought). Oat starch is also fundamental to the Oatinol Delivery System™ in Fibregest and many of our other products, which enables a higher absorption rate of important active ingredients.

Does Fibregest Contain Wheat?

No absolutely not. It does contain horse (black) oats, which have less starch than feed oats. They also provide slower release energy when compared with feeds like wheat or maize, which are much higher in starch and can be dangerous for an equine.

Unfortunately a lot of the balancers on the market do use wheatfeed (middlings) - this is a wheat by-product which can cause allergies.

As well as black oats, Fibregest also contains hempseed, linseed expeller, soya hulls and micronized beet pulp. We are confident that its use will be beneficial for your horse.

Does Fibregest Contain Amino Acids?

Yes. Horses need 21 amino acids in total and whilst the body can manufacture some of these from its feed supply, others need to be added. Some feed ingredients already contain a rich supply of certain amino acids - for example we use linseed expeller as a good source of lysine. However, we also add concentrated forms of lysine, methionine and threonine to Fibregest. Both threonine and lysine are often very lacking in a typical equine diet, especially lysine which is hard to balance in GM free diets where soya is not present.

Why Does Fibregest Contain Micronized (Sugar) Beet Pulp When Sugar is Not Good For Horses?

Beet pulp is the fibre left after sugar is extracted from sugar beet, mainly carried out in the UK at British Sugar in East Anglia. Sugar extraction has evolved significantly in the past two decades and residues are minimal. What is left are high quality digestible fibres which are excellent gut conditioners for both ruminants and hind gut fermenters like horses. This is a great slow release energy source, making it a perfect nutritional fit across the day.

Beet pulp also contains pectin fibres which are excellent for hind gut fermentation and for strengthening the natural mucus layer that lines the digestive tract. This surface protection helps to prevent antagonists from entering via the gut wall into the blood stream and is very beneficial against the causes of metabolic laminitis.

Micronized sugar beet pulp is made from unmolassed sugar beet pulp which has not had any molasses added to it, meaning it is 95% sugar free. The act of micronizing involves a type of cooking and then flaking. This prevents protein from denaturing and provides a perfect fibre profile for a horse or pony. This is important because fibre digestion can occur right the way along the gut length.

Why Does Fibregest Contain Cane Molasses When Sugar is Not Good For My Horse?

Sugar fed in significant amounts can indeed be very detrimental for horses - this is particularly seen in the spring when grass sugars are at their highest, often leading to laminitis or colic symptoms.

However, we only use a tiny percentage of cane molasses within Fibregest to help with physical pellet quality and consistency. When you consider that 40% of the molasses is also water, the sugar amount in 500gms of Fibregest is actually very small. As a comparison, 1kg of average hay will contain as much as 100gms of sugar!

There is sugar in everything in one form or another and the key factor is the quantity being fed. Little and often is always the best way, because the impact of lower levels of sugar entering the bloodstream over a longer period is much easier for insulin resistant equines to deal with.

Is Fibregest Suitable for a Horse with EMS or Cushing's Disease?

Yes, Fibregest contains less than 10% sugar and starch so it's a suitable lower starch feed.
