Explained - Nutraceuticals & the Oatinol® Delivery System

Explained - The 14 Active Nutraceuticals in Joint Aid Plus for Horses

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Betaine

Helps preserve the availability of essential amino acids methionine and choline for use within the body.

Collagen Matrix

Collagen is the body's natural glue that is crucial for all connective tissue, including the base membrane of the hoof. Collagen is essential for connecting and supporting tendons, muscles, cartilage and ligaments, particularly the anchoring points where they are attached to structures like bones and hooves.

Curcumin

An active ingredient of the spice, turmeric. It is a natural and powerful antioxidant and supports the normal anti-inflammatory action of the body.

Glucosamine (Vegetable Source)

Gives cartilage its structure and shock absorbing qualities. It is involved in the formation of cartilage, tendons, skin, bone and ligaments.

Glutamic Acid

A natural flavour enhancer and an important nutritional support for natural gut health during times of stress.

Hyaluronic Acid (Vegetable Source)

Involved in the structural formation of cartilage and helps to cushion and lubricate the joints.

Manganese (inc. Protected)

Essential for the production of chondroitin sulphate to aid healthy movement and the utilisation of fats and carbohydrates for energy.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Essential for the manufacture of collagen and a source of sulphur, which helps to form cross links with other molecules that maintain the strength and integrity of connective tissues.

Oligosaccharides (Mannan) (Prebiotic)

Support the immune system by maintaining naturally high levels of macrophage activity to block harmful organisms, such as some unnatural moulds and fungi prevalent in hay, being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids provide the precursors of anti-inflammatory regulators and are a daily source of essential fat components, providing the correct dietary balance with pro-inflammatory regulatory component omega 6. Omega 3's are also found in large concentrations in spermatozoa and are essential for maintaining cell wall integrity and preventing moisture/oil loss from the skin.

Peppermint Extract

Provides anti-inflammatory support with a palatable flavour.

Piperine Black Pepper Extract

Piperine black pepper extract is a natural nutritional addition that supports the retention in the metabolism of some active nutraceuticals e.g. curcumin.

Vitamin C

Essential for the production of collagen in the body that forms the matrix of connective tissues in mammals. It directly affects the level of tissue growth and development and the maintenance of the body's immune system.

Yeast Cultures

Help to stabilise the pH in the foregut and encourage the development of beneficial fibre digesting bacteria. This is important when feeding cereal based feeds as starch is converted into lactic acid, which can increase acidity and create an unfavourable environment for the fibre digesting bacteria. Significantly improve the digestibility of phosphorus from normal feed.

Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:

  • Maintain gut cell integrity.
  • Maintain the lining of the gut.
  • Support the immune system.
  • Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers

Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.

Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants

Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.

Oat Derived Beta Glucans

Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.

Phospholipids

Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What Makes Joint Aid Plus Unique?

Not only does Joint Aid Plus contain our unique Oatinol Delivery System™ but it also contains glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, hydroxy manganese, MSN and collagen matrix amongst others making it an exceptional joint supplement which is well researched and receives excellent feedback. Piperine, resveratrol and curcumin add various antioxidants and improved absorption ability.

Oatinol™ allows for the improved absorption of nutrients by blocking pathogens and supporting the immune system, maintaining cell integrity and the gut lining, and finally aiding the absorption of key ingredients.

The gut lining is an important line of defence for any species, which means that the absorption of some nutrients can be problematic. For example, simple inorganic minerals can bind together making them too big to pass through the lining of the gut. They are then simply passed through the body. Oatinol™ improves the absorption of these important nutrients using a lipid base to help emulsify them and ease their passage through the digestive wall.

Who Should Joint Aid Plus be Fed to?

Performance, medium, elderly and hardworking horses. There is both a general maintenance level and a full support level. We generally advocate that general maintenance is fed to competing horses, whilst full support typically supplies specific ailments, age, very hard working and recovery. This is very much the flagship product of our Equine range being in the market place over 20 years with excellent feedback.

Can Joint Aid Plus be Fed with Balancers?

Yes absolutely. It is specifically designed to be fed alongside our own balancer Equilibra and can also be fed alongside our simple vitamin and mineral supplement OneCup.

Can Joint Aid Plus be Fed with Your Other Supplements?

Yes of course. It is commonly used with Muscle Maintenance for Horses to support muscular structure and recovery as well as joints, tendons and ligaments.

Is Joint Aid Plus Suitable for a Mare in Foal?

Yes it's absolutely fine for a mare in foal. The building blocks will help with the development of the unborn foal's connective tissues and bone growth.

Is Joint Aid Plus GM Free?

Yes, the product is completely free from GM ingredients.

Where Can I Buy Joint Aid Plus for Horses?

Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. If your local feed store is not currently stocking Joint Aid Plus please let us know and we may be able to help. Alternatively our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.

Can You Feed Too Much Joint Aid Plus?

Not really, it would just be expensive and not required past a certain point. The product is designed to be fed at the guide feed rates.

Is Joint Aid Plus Economical to Feed?

Joint Aid Plus requires a low daily feed rate and is therefore quite cost effective. It also contains some high value ingredients to ensure complete support for your horse's joints, including glucosamine and hyaluronic acid.

Does Joint Aid Plus Contain a High Level of Starch?

Joint Aid Plus contains 20% starch, which is important for aiding absorption. Given that feed rates are typically only 50grams/day the starch level is often only 10grams which is small, particularly for performance horses.

Does Joint Aid Plus Contain Wheat?

No absolutely not. It does contain black oats though which offer slow release energy and form the basis of the Oatinol™ Delivery System. It is predominantly made up of very high value actives to support joint support including glucosamine, MSM, collagen matrix, hydroxy minerals and hyaluronic acid amongst others.

Is Joint Aid Plus Suitable for a Horse With EMS or Cushing's Disease?

Yes, it is supplying specific actives designed to support the joints. The starch and sugar content is required for absorption and will only make up a very small inclusion of the horse's total intake.

My Horse Has a Collateral Ligament Desmitis Injury - Will Joint Aid Plus Help?

Joint Aid Plus at 100gm/day will provide all the building blocks for maintaining all the connective tissues in the body, including glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, MSM sulphur, collagen matrix, vitamin C and glutamic acid This includes tendons and ligaments. However, the degree of rupture or tear has a strong bearing on recovery. Strains and minor tears will heal with time and Joint Aid Plus will support this natural process by supplementing the nutritional requirements. The inclusion of potent antioxidants like the curcumin/black pepper extract combination plus Omega 3’s will also support the natural anti-inflammatory actions of the body which will also be of benefit.
