Explained - The 26 Active Nutraceuticals in Muscle Maintenance for Horses

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Amino Acids (x12)

Essential for the creation and growth of muscles, connective tissue and skin and help maintain muscle tone, tissue strength, digestion as well as the healing and repair process within the body.

Antioxidants (x4)

Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium and Curcumin work together to 'mop up' free radicals.

Collagen Matrix

Collagen possesses great tensile strength and provides the framework that gives tissues their firmness and resilience. It is essential for connecting and supporting the bones, tendons, muscles and cartilage.

Digestible Oat Starch

Helps to maintain glycogen storage in muscle tissue to reduce muscle fatigue.

Folic Acid

Helps the body produce and maintain new cells.

Hemp Oil Derived Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Hemp Oil is a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids found in the plant world. This unique combination enables the animal to produce other essential Omega 3 fats called EPA & DHA, both of which are normally only found in fish oils and are crucial for maintaining the natural anti-inflammatory action of the body.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is involved in the structural formation of cartilage and helps to cushion and lubricate the joints.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for healthy eyesight, a strong bone structure, good fertility and an active immune system. A daily intake of Vitamin A is crucial for life. Horses and ponies cannot exist without it.

Vitamin B12

B vitamins are essential for maintaining normal, healthy blood flow to all areas of the body, including the mucosal lining of the gut wall and the extremities of the hooves. Blood flow is essential for the supply of active ingredients to maintain normal gut barrier defences and hoof integrity.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen in the body that forms the matrix of connective tissues in mammals. It directly affects the level of tissue growth and development and the maintenance of the body's immune system.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for bone development by improving the uptake of calcium and phosphorus from feeding stuffs. Vitamin D is also important for the immune system, fertility and the release of insulin in the presence of glucose.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a biological antioxidant, vitamin E protects the membranes of every cell wall in the body and thus is essential for the health of reproductive, muscular, circulatory, nervous systems and immune functions in the metabolism.

Explained - The 4 Active Nutraceuticals in the Oatinol Delivery System

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Oatinol is a natural high quality oil based concept developed by and unique to GWF Nutrition. When incorporated into the feed it supplies the following four active nutraceuticals to:

  • Maintain gut cell integrity.
  • Maintain the lining of the gut.
  • Support the immune system.
  • Aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers

Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that create the perfect medium for the absorption of active ingredients across the gut wall.

Natural Tocotrienol Antioxidants

Tocotrienol antioxidants are a natural form of vitamin E. They are 40-60 times more readily available than other forms of vitamin E and help to maintain the integrity of the cells forming the lining of the gut to aid absorption.

Oat Derived Beta Glucans

Beta Glucans have prebiotic properties that support beneficial bacteria in the gut to promote healthy absorption.

Phospholipids have emulsifying properties and have been shown to actively influence nutrient digestibility and absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What Makes Muscle Maintenance Unique?

It is specifically designed for replenishing muscle and there are very few products like it in the market place. It contains 12 amino acids, collagen matrix, hyaluronic acid and various vitamins and minerals for improving muscle mass and replenishment.

Like most of our products, it is also formulated with our unique Oatinol Delivery System™, making it exceptional in its field. Oatinol™ allows for the improved absorption of nutrients by blocking pathogens and supporting the immune system, maintaining cell integrity and the gut lining, and finally aiding the absorption of key ingredients.

Who Should Muscle Maintenance be Fed to?

Performance and medium/hardworking horses as well as senior or recovering horses.

Muscle Maintenance is designed to replenish muscle reserves and aid performance improvements. Every horse's body undergoes constant tissue depletion and replenishment as a natural process. Providing all the essential components for high rates of muscle building and recovery, whilst minimising muscle loss, are key to having a strong athletic horse.

Can Muscle Maintenance be Fed with Balancers?

Yes of course, it is specifically designed to be fed alongside our own balancer Equilibra or our simple vitamin and mineral supplement OneCup.

Can Muscle Maintenance be Fed With Your Other Supplements?

Yes absolutely.

Can I Try a Sample Before I Buy?

Yes of course, if you would like a sample of one of our products please just get in touch.

Where Can I Buy Muscle Maintenance for Horses?

Our feeds and supplements are available at most good pet shops and country stores around the UK. To find a local stockist in your area search using our Stockist Locator. If your local feed store is not currently stocking Muscle Maintenance please let us know and we may be able to help. Alternatively our products are also available from a variety of online retailers.

Can You Feed Too Much Muscle Maintenance?

Not really it would just be unnecessary additional cost past a certain point.

Is Muscle Maintenance GM Free?

Yes, there are no GM ingredients in Muscle Maintenance for Horses.

What is the Energy Level/DE of Muscle Maintenance for Horses?

15.1 DE (November 2022)

Is Muscle Maintenance Suitable for a Horse with EMS or Cushing's?

Yes absolutely fine, as it is supply protein rather than sugar or starch.

Is Muscle Maintenance Economical to Feed?

Muscle Maintenance is a high value protein source and is very different to the rest of our feeds and supplements for competing and high work horses. However, we have worked to keep our prices competitive, and thanks to our low feeding rate Muscle Maintenance still provides a cost effective way to support your horse's muscular structure and recovery.

Does Muscle Maintenance Contain a High Level of Starch?

The starch content in Muscle Maintenance is important for aiding absorption. Given that feed rates are typically only 100grams/day the starch level is relatively small. Hard working and performance horses would also utilise this starch.

Does Muscle Maintenance Contain Wheat?

No, absolutely not. It does contain black oats though, which provide a more suitable and slow release energy source for horses. It is predominantly made up of very high value proteins including concentrated amino acids, refined hemp protein and maize gluten meal (prairie) as well as hyaluronic acid.

Is Muscle Maintenance Suitable for a Horse with PSSM?

Type 1 PSSM is basically a disorder that encourages glycogen deposition due to hypersensitivity from insulin (along with a number of other factors). Noone knows the cause of type 2 PSSM.

PSSM can cause muscle damage and atrophy, and this can be attributed to both energy shortage and a general reduction of insulin release; as insulin sensitivity is so high, very little is produced.
Another function of insulin is to help the uptake of amino acids from the blood and reduce protein breakdown. Reduced insulin is a factor in PSSM induced muscle breakdown, or myopathy.

As Muscle Maintenance is designed to support muscle generation, it will offset some of the insulin shortfall and also supply creatine (from lysine) and so reduce the generation of creatine kinase (another PSSM marker).

The improvement of the muscle recovery also has a sparing effect on any free glucose in the plasma and so more is available for muscle activity.

The combination of curcumin and other antioxidants also help to reduce low level inflammation from muscle breakdown. Along with a low starch, high fibre diet, Muscle Maintenance can be very helpful for a PSSM challenged horse.
